Extract selectable PDF text locally

Copying text from a PDF is not always convenient, especially when the document has many pages or you need the text in a plain editor. This PDF to text tool reads selectable text from every page and places it into one text area that you can copy or download as a TXT file. It runs entirely in your browser with pdfjs-dist, so the source PDF is not uploaded or stored by a remote service. The extractor is useful for research notes, quotes, contracts, reports, invoices, manuals and any PDF where the text layer already exists.

Selectable text versus scanned images

PDFs can store text in different ways. A born-digital PDF, such as one exported from a word processor, usually contains real selectable text. A scanned PDF may contain only pictures of pages. If a scan has already been processed with OCR, text extraction can work because the OCR layer is hidden behind the image. If it is image-only, this tool cannot invent text from pixels; run OCR first and then extract the resulting text layer. Your browser loads the document from local memory, asks each page for its text content and combines the results with page labels.

Cleaning up extracted output

PDF text order depends on how the original file was built. Simple pages usually extract cleanly, while multi-column layouts, tables, headers, footers and rotated text may need manual cleanup. Review the output before quoting or reusing it. The tool adds page separators so you can trace text back to its source page and fix any line breaks or spacing that do not match the original reading order. The output is plain text, which makes it easy to paste into a document, search in a code editor, feed into another local workflow or save alongside the original PDF.

Frequently asked questions

Does text extraction upload the PDF?
No. pdfjs-dist reads the PDF in your browser and the extracted text stays on your device.
Will scanned PDFs produce text?
Only if the scan already contains an OCR text layer. Image-only scans need OCR first.
Can I copy the extracted text?
Yes. Use the copy button or download a .txt file with the extracted page text.
Is formatting preserved?
The tool focuses on selectable text. Complex columns, tables and exact layout may need manual cleanup.
