Remove a known password from a PDF

Banks, utilities, payroll systems and government portals often send PDFs that ask for a password every single time you open them. That is useful in transit but annoying once the file sits in your own archive, and it breaks tools that need to read the document, such as merging, OCR or printing services. This tool creates an unlocked copy of a PDF with the encryption removed, so it opens directly from then on.

You need to know the password: the tool is designed for documents you are entitled to open, not for breaking into other people's files. Enter the password once, and qpdf — an open-source PDF toolkit running inside your browser as WebAssembly — decrypts the file and writes a clean copy. The document and the password stay on your device the whole time.

Open passwords and permission restrictions

Some PDFs open without any password but still refuse to print, edit or let you copy text. These use only an owner password to set permissions. Leave the password field empty and click Unlock; the saved copy has no encryption, so those restrictions disappear as well. For files that ask for a password when opened, type that password. Either the open password or the owner password works. Every common encryption type is supported, from old 40-bit RC4 files to modern AES-256 documents.

If unlocking fails

A “Wrong password” message means the text you entered does not match. Passwords are case-sensitive, so check Caps Lock, the keyboard language and any spaces copied along with the password from an email. Bank statements frequently use a date of birth or part of an account number in a specific format described in the accompanying message. If the file is reported as invalid, it may be damaged or not a PDF at all. Remember that removing protection also removes its safeguards: store the unlocked copy somewhere secure, and use Protect PDF to add a new password before sharing it again.

Frequently asked questions

Can this tool crack a PDF password I don't know?
No. You must enter the correct password. The tool removes encryption from files you are already able to open; it does not guess or bypass passwords.
Is my file or password uploaded?
No. Decryption runs locally in your browser with qpdf compiled to WebAssembly. Nothing is sent to a server.
What if the PDF opens without a password but blocks printing or copying?
Leave the password field empty and click Unlock. The copy is saved without encryption, so the permission restrictions are removed too.
What does the "Wrong password" message mean?
The password you typed does not match either the open or the owner password of the file. Passwords are case-sensitive, so check Caps Lock and the keyboard layout.
